How to prevent falls

Today I would like to share with you an article I found from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). They estimate that "40% of all falls by persons over 65 can be prevented by taking these FOUR STEPS:

1. Begin a regular exercise program.
Exercises that improve balance and coordination are the most helpful in decreasing risk of falls.

2. Have your health care provider review your medicines
, even over-the-counter medicines, herbal remedies and medication that you take or might take only occasionally. This is especially important if you see more than 1 physician who orders medicines for you or if you use more than 1 pharmacy!

3. Have your vision checked by an eye doctor at least once a year. You may need a new lens prescription or have a condition like glaucoma or cataracts that limits your vision.

4. Make your home safer. 60% of all falls happen at home. Use bright lights. Secure loose rugs, oxygen tubing and electrical cords. Install grab bars in tubs and showers. Check handrails for sturdiness and use them—every time! Keep walkways clear of clutter. Wear shoes or hard-soled slippers. Keep a phone at hand or in your walker basket.
